Meaghan Benfeito, Roseline Filion win diving bronze
Fellow Canadian Gagne finishes top 10 in men’s 3m, 10m synchro
Montreal's Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion of Laval, Que. will gladly accept their bronze medals from Friday's diving World Series event, even though it wasn't one of their more memorable performances.
The Canadians scored 310.86 points in the women's 10-metre synchronized platform final in Beijing, well back of the winning duo and world champions Ruolin Chen and Huixia Liu of China (345.36) and silver medallists Mun Yee Leong and Jun Hoong Cheong of Malaysia (320.28).
"Overall, we are satisfied," Filion told reporters. "There are small details we need to work out and we certainly would like to have our fourth dive back.
"Our training has been strong and that needs to be better reflected in competition."
Benfeito and Filion — the 2012 Olympic bronze medallists — won gold last month at the FINA Grand Prix opener in Germany.
In the women's three-metre synchro, Canada's Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware were fifth with 287.82 points. China's Tingmao Shi and Minxia Wu won the event with 328.50 points.
Meanwhile, Montreal's Philippe Gagne claimed top-10 finishes in the men's three-metre and 10m synchro.
He was sixth with Vincent Riendeau of Pointe-Claire, Que., on the tower and teamed with Francois Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., for a seventh-place finish on the springboard.
"I'm feeling pretty tired," the 17-year-old Gagne, a double medallist at last year's Youth Olympics, said. "It's certainly more difficult to do two completely different events on the same day."
Riendeau and Gagne agreed there were more errors and a lack of energy in the 10m event. Riendeau will compete with Benfeito this weekend in the 10m mixed synchro.
