Canada's Farrell eliminated in women's snowboard parallel giant slalom in Beijing

It was a solid day for Canada’s Megan Farrell in women’s snowboard parallel giant slalom on Tuesday at the Beijing Olympics.

It was a solid day for Canada's Megan Farrell in women's snowboard parallel giant slalom on Tuesday at the Beijing Olympics.

Farrell, a 29-year-old from Bracebridge, Ont., posted strong results through the first two rounds to advance to the 1/8 Final.

In the 1/8 Final where athletes race against each other and the eight winners advance, Farrell was eliminated after finishing 0.50 seconds just behind Austria's Daniela Ulbing.

In the women's qualification run, Farrell (43.96) and Kaylie Buck (44.12) posted good enough times to advance to the elimination run, while Jennifer Hawkrigg bowed out with a Did Not Finish.

In the elimination run, Farrell completed the course in 44.41 for a combined time of 1:28.37 to finish 10th overall and move on to the 1/8 Final.

Buck posted a time of 46.02 for a combined time of 1:30.14, but didn't make the cut as she finished 21st. The Czech Republic's Ester Ledecka had the fastest combined time at 1:23.63

The top 16 athletes qualify for the 1/8 Final.

In the men's qualification run, Jules Lefebvre (41.66), Sébastien Beaulieu (42.00) and Arnaud Gaudet (42.26) moved on to the elimination run.

In the elimination run, Lefebvre's second run clocked in at 41.28 for a combined time of 1:22.94 (20th overall). Gaudet went down the course in 42.17 for a combined time of 1:24.43 (26th overall). Beaulieu had a second-run of 42.52 for a combined time of 1:24.52 (27th overall). South Korea's Sangho Lee had the fastest combined time at 1:20.54.

In the women's final, Ledecka beat Ulbing (DNF) to repeat as the Olympic gold medal champion, while Slovenia's Gloria Kotnik bested Michelle Dekker (DNF) of the Netherlands to take the bronze medal.

On the men's side, Benjamin Karl of Austria edged Slovenia's Tim Mastnake by 0.82 seconds to win the gold medal. The Russian Olympic Committee's Victor Wild claimed the bronze by beating Italy's Roland Fischnaller (DNF).
