Cassie Sharpe falls short of elusive ski halfpipe world title

​Canadian ski halfpipe star Cassie Sharpe is still searching for a world title.

The reigning Olympic champion from Comox, B.C., bobbled her third and final run and didn't finish on Saturday, scoring 32.00 points for a second-place finish at the freestyle ski and snowboard world championships in Park City, Utah.

The 26-year-old secured the silver medal in the field of eight with a first run score of 94.40. Sharpe amassed 91.40 points on her second run.

Sixteen-year-old Kelly Sildaru of Estonia, who missed the majority of last season with a knee injury suffered in a training crash months before the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea last February, scored 95.00 on her final run for the victory. Brita Sigourney of the United States was third.

Sixteen-year-old Kelly Sildaru of Estonia claims gold at the world championships with a score of 95.00.

"Kelly laid down a phenomenal final run," Sharpe said in a press release. "I'm happy for her, though obviously I'm a bit disappointed at having missed coming in first."

"I was really sad about that, but I tried to keep a positive vibe," Sildaru said recently in an interview with the Borneo Bulletin newspaper in Brunei. "I knew that if I worked hard I'd get back on the skis faster."

Sildaru entered worlds fresh off a three-medal performance at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo, where she captured silver behind the victorious Sharpe in halfpipe.

Kelly Sildaru, the 16-year-old Estonian phenom, overtook reigning Olympic champion Cassie Sharpe in her final run at the freestyle ski world championships to win gold in the halfpipe.

Rachael Karker of Erin, Ont., placed fourth with a score of 85.20 at her worlds debut on Saturday.

In men's halfpipe action, Calgary's Noah Bowman earned bronze with 91.60 points that was achieved on his third and final run. He was followed by teammate Simon d'Artois of Whistler, B.C., in fourth place (91.40).
