Kaitlyn Weaver, Andrew Poje earn gold in season debut

Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo, Ont., began their international season on with a gold medal performance at the Finlandia Trophy figure skating competition in Espoo, Finland on Saturday. 

The event is the fourth stop on the ISU Challenger Series circuit, but the first for the Canadian duo. 

Weaver and Poje won five gold medals last season in international competition and totalled 161.67 points to place first in both the short dance and free skate to continue their winning ways.

Isabella Tobias and Ilia Tkachenko of Israel were second at 150.89, while Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Sorensen of Denmark were third with 147.65.

"We had two great programs although there were some mistakes," said Weaver.

"But these events are an opportunity to see the areas we need to improve and get some important feedback."

Weaver and Poje will next compete at the Skate Canada International from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 in Lethbridge, Alta.

Brianna Delmaestro of Port Moody, B.C., and Timothy Lum of Burnaby, B.C., were seventh.

In the men's competition, Liam Firus of North Vancouver is ninth after the short program, with the free skate set for Sunday.
