Debra Armstrong has been appointed chief executive officer of Skate Canada.

Armstrong joined the sport's national governing body in 2016 as its chief operating officer. The news comes a day after Skate Canada announced Dan Thompson, who was hired as CEO in 2013, was leaving to pursue other opportunities.

Armstrong's career includes 17 years at MBNA Canada Bank, where she worked in increasingly senior roles and as president and CEO led the organization through its acquisition by TD Bank.

She also serves on the board of governors of Carleton University, is a past president of Volleyball Canada and was recently appointed to the nominating committee of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

"Debra's proven background in business growth and change management, as well as in sport governance and leadership will be a tremendous asset to Skate Canada," president Leanna Caron said in a news release.
