Thompson, Del Bosco win silver at World Cup ski-cross event

Canadians Marielle Thompson and Christopher Del Bosco won silver medals at a World Cup ski cross event Wednesday.

After Christmas is traditionally the time of year that Canada's Christopher Del Bosco rounds into form on the World Cup ski cross circuit.   

The former world champion from Montreal did just that Wednesday, finishing second in a men's event for his first podium of the season. Marielle Thompson of Whistler, B.C., captured the silver medal in the women's event.   

"Typically, that's how it has been in the past," Del Bosco said of his post-Christmas trend. "I've skied well enough in my early races to get on the podium, I've just had some tough luck.   

"I know once we get here these kind of tracks I really like. I know I've been skiing well but that's how it seems to go, about this time I kind of find my stride … we'll see how it plays out."   

Filip Flisar of Slovenia won the men's final for his first World Cup win. Del Bosco was second ahead of Sweden's Lars Lewen.   

Sanna Luedi of Switzerland earned her first World Cup victory in the women's final to top the ski cross standings. Thompson was second while Andrea Limbacher of Austria finished third.   

Thompson said she took a cerebral approach in the final.   

"I definitely kept thinking the whole way down," she said. "Sometimes I don't pay attention or I get off into a different world.   

"I kept on my lines the whole day and it worked. I need to keep thinking."   

Thompson, who claimed her first career World Cup podium with a third-place finish in the season-opener last month, is now fourth in the overall standings with 187 points. Luedi leads with 289, ahead of world champion Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna. B.C., (276).   

"I was kind of shocked when I looked at the standings," Thompson said. "Coming out of last season I never really thought I could do that but it looks like it if I keep these results coming and keep skiing how I'm skiing I might get there."   

But the news wasn't all good for the Canadian team as Serwa went out in the final, suffering a knee injury to finish fourth.   

"Well, I made it to the finals today but never crossed the finish line. I did a flat spin 360 off one of the jumps, unfortunately my knee didn't survive the crash. Haven't had an MRI yet but they figure there's damage to the ACL, MCL and possibly meniscus. Congrats to my teammates Marielle Thompson and Chris Del Bosco on their second place finishes!!" Serwa posted on Facebook.   

The next event will be held Sunday at Les Contamines, France.
