Slalom win gives Hirscher overall World Cup lead

Marcel Hirscher won a men's World Cup night slalom in difficult conditions Thursday and moved to the top of the overall standings.

The Austrian, who led after the first run, finished in a combined time of one minute, 51.84 seconds to beat Felix Neureuther of Germany by 0.29. In the standings, the Austrian overtook Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who skipped the race.

Defending overall champion Ivica Kostelic of Croatia was 0.48 behind in third.

Michael Janyk of Whistler, B.C., was 14th and Brad Spence of Calgary was 24th.

The Crveni Spust course rapidly deteriorated during the competition because of the warm weather.
