Roenning victorious at cross-country World Cup race

Norway's Eldar Roenning has won the cross-country classical-style race, edging Swiss leader Dario Cologna by 0.6 seconds in the World Cup meet.

Norway's Eldar Roenning has won the cross-country classical-style race, edging Swiss leader Dario Cologna by 0.6 seconds in the World Cup meet.

The 29-year old Roenning finished the 50-kilometre race in 2 hours, 32 minutes, 27.1 seconds on Saturday.

"This is big, a dream has come true," Roenning said.

Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway, who led the pack on the final stretch at the Holmenkollen ski stadium, was 5.8 seconds back in third.

Canadian Devon Kershaw finished 10th, nine seconds behind Roenning.

Kershaw sits second in the overall World Cup standings with 1214 points. Cologna is the leader with 1900 points. Canada's Alex Harvey finished 29th with a total time of 2:33:05.1, while Kevin Sandau placed 47th.

Len Valjas, the Canadian who won his first career World Cup medal on Wednesday by taking home a silver in the 1.2 km discipline, did not finish the race, nor did fellow countryman Ivan Babikov.
