Diamond League: Andre De Grasse wins men's 200m in Birmingham
Canada's Melissa Bishop takes 3rd in women's 800m
Canada's Andre De Grasse raced to a win and posted a season-best time in the men's 200 metre at the Diamond League event in Birmingham, England on Sunday.
"I'm happy to get my first win here in Europe," said De Grasse after the race. "I still have a lot of work to do trying to get back into shape. [...] Every race I go into I expect to win."
De Grasse ran the race in 20.16 seconds, edging Alonso Edward by 0.01.
Edward leads the Diamond League standings with 22 points, while De Grasse sits in third place with the 10 points he earned in Birmingham. Canadian Aaron Brown, who placed second in the the 200m event in Rome on Thursday, is fourth overall.
De Grasse wasn't the only Canadian to hit a season-best time.
Melissa Bishop notched a third-place finish in the women's 800m race. The Eganville, Ont. native improved upon season-best time by finishing in 1:58.48.
In other Canadian results, Liz Gleadle was fifth in women's javelin, Canadian steeplechase athletes Taylor Milne and Chris Winter placed eighth and ninth, respectively.
Kimberley Hyancinthe finished ninth in her 100m heat and did not advance to the final.
Harrison does it again
Sally Pearson finished seventh in her first competitive 100m hurdles race in a year following a serious wrist injury, far behind an upcoming American who looks in prime shape to take the Australian's Olympic title.
Kendra Harrison won in 12.46 seconds in Birmingham, showing her stunning victory in Eugene last week — in 12.24, the second-fastest time ever — was no one-off.
Pearson trailed home in 13.25, a time she described as "disgusting," but she had an excuse. It's a year and a day since she suffered what doctors said was a "bone explosion" in a heavy fall in a race in Rome, and Pearson hadn't raced since.
Among the winners in Birmingham were Mo Farah in the 3,000 metres, Kirani James in the 400 and 40-year-old Kim Collins in a weak men's 100 field.
