Canada's Andre De Grasse put himself back in the conversation as one of the world's top sprinters Saturday with his 9.99-second clocking at the Müller Anniversary Games in London, his first sub-10-second performance in legal wind since the 100-metre final at the 2016 Olympics.

Canada's Andre De Grasse put himself back in the conversation as one of the world's top sprinters Saturday with his 9.99-second clocking at the Müller Anniversary Games in London, his first sub-10-second performance in legal wind since the 100-metre final at the 2016 Olympics.

"I really can't complain," De Grasse, who placed fifth in the field of nine, told CBC News' Stephanie Jenzer at London Stadium following the race. "To be on the sideline for two years [with a pair of hamstring injuries], trying to stay motivated and come here and run sub-10, I can only go up from here.

"The world championships is two months away and I have a lot of time to drop my time."

The 2016 triple Olympic medallist had run 10.05 at the Ostrava Golden Spike event in the Czech Republic on June 20 and earlier Saturday in his semifinal heat, but his coach Rana Reider knew De Grasse was capable of much more.

South Africa's Akani Simbine won Saturday's race in a season-best 9.93, followed by Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain (9.95 SB) and Yohan Blake of Jamaica (9.97). The 2011 world champion went 9.96 at the Jamaican championships on June 21.
