Olympic medal predictor: Diving should be Canada's strength
Canada still projected for just 1 gold in Rio
Expect Canadian divers to shoulder a good chunk of the country's medal hopes in Rio, according to the latest data from Infostrada's Olympic medal predictor.
There hasn't been much action in top-level summer sports over the past month, but in the most recent update, Canada is projected to win 20 medals. It's a slight downgrade from December, when the Canadians were pegged to win 21 medals.
Canada has slipped to 41st in the virtual medal table, sandwiched between Uzbekistan and Sweden. (Remember, the table is ordered on gold-medal count, and currently, Canada is tracking to win just one gold).
While December was a quiet month on the summer sport front, Canada's top divers had a strong showing at the national championships in Saskatoon. Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware dominated, finishing well above the rest of the field.
The medal predictor is anticipating two silver medals for Canadian divers in Rio, courtesy of Abel and Ware (3-metre springboard synchro), and Meaghan Benefeito and Roseline Filion (10m platform synchro).
According to Infostrada, the data strongly suggests the Chinese are a lock to win gold in those events.
