Canada's men's field hockey team played spoiler to South Africa's hopes of making the quarter-finals with a 4-4 draw Friday in Tokyo.

The Canadians (0-1-4) had already been eliminated on Wednesday after losing to Belgium.

On the flip side, South Africa (1-1-3) had hopes of making the top four in pool B to qualify for the quarter-finals with a second victory.

Canada kept the game tight throughout, never falling behind by more than a goal. Going into the fourth quarter tied 3-3, neither team was able to break the game open until the 58-minute mark when South Africa's Samkelo Mvimbi scored to make it 4-3.

With a sense of urgency kicking in and momentum on the South African side, Burnaby, B.C., native Gabriel Ho-Garcia scored on his lone shot attempt, while falling by the goal-line to tie the game up for Canada.

Mark Pearson, of Tsawwassen, B.C., Toronto's Keegan Pereira, and John Boothroyd of West Vancouver, B.C., also scored for Canada.
