Canadian men's rugby sevens tie for last place in Paris tournament

Canada went winless for the second tournament a row on the HSBC World Series, finishing tied for 15th at the 16-team Paris Sevens on Sunday.

Consigned to consolation play after finishing last in their pool with an 0-3-0 record, the Canadian men were beaten 33-0 by Russia and 17-12 in overtime by Wales. They were outscored 154-35 at the tournament.

Canada has now lost 11 straight on the circuit with its last win coming April 10 in Hong Kong.

Samoa, a team Canada may well face in June at a last-ditch Olympic qualifier, upset Series leader Fiji 29-26 to win the tournament. Samoa rallied from 21-0 and 26-7 deficits to win its first Cup since Dubai in 2012, moving up to eighth in the Series standings in the process.

Host France defeated Argentina 26-17 to finish third.

After nine stops on the 10-event rugby sevens circuit, Canada remains 13th.

Team to make final push for Rio qualification

The Canadian cause was not helped Sunday with Nathan Hirayama sidelined by a hand injury. But after the one-sided loss to Russia, Canada started well in the Shield semifinal against Wales. Admir Cejvanovic had the opening try and Adam Zaruba scored of the restart for a 12-7 halftime lead.

But Wales fought back and Luke Treharne's OT try was the decider.

The Canadian men are using Paris and London, the final two stops on the HSBC World Series, to gear up for a last-ditch Olympic repechage tournament next month in Monaco. So far, it has been a rocky road.

Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Mexico, Morocco, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Tonga, Tunisia, Uruguay, Zimbabwe and favoured Samoa are the other teams in the Olympic qualifier.
