Damian Warner wins hurdles title at Canadian track championships

Damian Warner took the 110-metre hurdles title at the Canadian track and field championships on Sunday in Moncton, N.B., a day after setting a personal best in the semifinal.

The London, Ont., native, who won the decathlon bronze medal at last year's world championships, battled the competition and a headwind to finish first in 13.66 seconds.

Phylicia George of Markham, Ont., edged Jessica Zelinka of London for the win in the women's 100 hurdles. The pair ran 13.20 and 13.23, respectively.

Defending champion Noelle Montcalm of Windsor, Ont., took home gold in the women's 400 hurdles with a time of 56.67. On the men's side, Gabriel El-Hanbli of Repentigny, Que., regained the title he last won in 2010, crossing the line in 51.65.

In the 800 final, Melissa Bishop of Eganville, Ont., and Brandon McBride of Windsor each took the pole position early and held on for the win. Bishop crossed the line in 2:03.23, while McBride clocked in at 1:46.69.

Kate Van Buskirk of Brampton, Ont., defended her title in the 1,500. In the men's race, Nate Brannen of Cambridge, Ont., claimed his sixth outdoor Canadian championship in 3:42.50.

Kimberly Hyacinthe of Montreal and Brendon Rodney of Toronto took the last track wins with victories in the 200. Hyacinthe crossed the line in 23.46, while Rodney finished with a time of 20.80.

Sultana Frizell of Perth, Ont., set a Canadian championship record in hammer throw with a toss of 73.78 metres. Christabel Nettey of Surrey, B.C., beat her own Canadian championship record with a 6.64-metre jump in long jump, and Shawnacy Barber of Toronto cleared 5.55 metres on his first attempt at the pole vault for another Canadian championship record.

Lindsey Bergevin of Leduc, Alta., won the women's pole vault, clearing 4.10 metres. And in men's hammer throw, Jim Steacy won his 10th national championship with a toss of 74.68 metres.

Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Que., collected his fifth and sixth titles of the championships with wins in the T53 wheelchair 800 and 5,000. Pamela Le Jean (T53 para wheelchair javelin), Becky Richter (F51 para wheelchair club throw), Kyle Whitehouse (T38 para ambulatory 200 metres) and Brent Babcock (F51 para wheelchair club throw) each set Canadian records on the day.
