Ashley Twichell continues U.S. dominance of open water 5k

Ashley Twichell gave the United States its first gold medal of the world championships with a victory in the women's 5-kilometre open water race Wednesday on Lake Balaton in Hungary.

Twichell crossed the line 3.5 seconds ahead of Aurelie Muller of France. The bronze went to Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil.

The American finished first overall on Wednesday at the FINA World Championships in a time of fifty-nine minutes and seven seconds.

The U.S. has captured 10 medals overall in the women's 5k, more than any other open water event at the world championships. This was the third straight gold for the Americans.

Canada's Breanne Emma Siwicki finished 2:52.8 behind Twichell, good for 29th place.

Defending world champion Haley Anderson finished fifth in the race, which was held about 130 kilometres southwest of Budapest.
