Canada's Celina Toth opened a new international diving season with a silver-medal performance in the platform event at the FINA Grand Prix stop at Gold Coast, Australia.

The 23-year-old from St. Thomas, Ont. who attends the University of Victoria, was competing for the first time since last summer's World University Games and said she didn't quite know what to expect.

Her consistent diving produced a second-place finish with 319.65 points, behind China's Siyu Ji who scored 368.05. Third went to Malaysia's Jun Hoong Cheong with 310.85.

''I was a little nervous at the beginning of the week because I wasn't training so well,'' Toth said. 'I gained more confidence through the prelims and semis. I'm super excited about what happened.''

Toth produced a consistent performance in the final, averaging 7.0 scores on four of her five dives the final.

''This was a strong field to face,'' she said. ''I knew it was probably going to be close in the final. It's good to have that experience.''
