Olympic wake-up call: Day 16 news you might have missed from the Winter Games

That just about does it for the 2018 Winter Olympics from Pyeongchang, as the closing ceremony is likely underway by the time you read this.

Before the credits roll — and please do take note of the efforts of your friendly neighbourhood journalists — here's a quick recap of all the important Olympic news you might have missed overnight.

Canadian medal count

Canada did not win any medals on the final day of competition but enjoyed a banner Olympics with a record 29 medals (11 gold, eight silver and 10 bronze). You can see the full medal standings here.

OAR wins hockey gold in OT

The Olympic Athletes from Russia took home men's hockey gold, defeating an upstart Germany 4-3 in overtime on the strength of a Kirill Kaprizov one-timer. With the win, OAR captain Pavel Datsyuk joined hockey's "Triple Gold Club" by adding an Olympic title to his three Stanley Cups and a 2012 world championship.

Germany appeared to be headed to an upset win with a one-goal lead and a power-play opportunity very late in the third period, but OAR scored a short-handed goal to force overtime.

As for what anthem played following the medal ceremony? Both players and fans did their best to drown out the Olympic anthem by singing the banned Russian anthem.

Virtue and Moir's tribute to Gord Downie

Canada's favourite ice dance couple — sorry, duo — of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir took to Olympic ice likely for the last time for the gala, skating to Long Time Running by The Tragically Hip as a tribute to late frontman Gord Downie.

Virtue and Moir won their second Olympic ice dance gold as well as helping Canada win the team event earlier at the Games.

And the final medal goes to...

Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjoergen, who's already the most decorated Winter Olympian ever, won the last gold up for grabs in the women's 30-kilometre mass start classic. It was Norway's 14th gold of the Games, equalling the record for a single Winter Games set by Canada in 2010 and matched by Germany at these Olympics.

Other notable news:

• Francesco Friedrich piloted Germany to gold in the four-man bobsleigh after securing two-man gold earlier in a tie with Canada's Justin Kripps, who placed sixth in the four-man.
• Sweden won gold in women's curling, defeating South Korea 8-3. It's the third Olympic women's gold won by the Swedes, surpassing Canada's two titles.

What's coming up on Sunday?

The closing ceremony airs live at 5:30 a.m. ET on CBC Sports and will be replayed at 6 p.m. ET.
