Brandon McBride 2nd in NCAA 800 metres
Runs second-fastest time in Canadian history
Windsor's Brandon McBride finished second in the 800 metres at the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The 21-year-old Mississippi State senior's time of one minute, 44.50 was third fastest in NCAA history. Texas A&M freshman Donavan Brazier won the race in a meet record time of 1:43.55.
McBride's time bettered his personal mark of 1:44.63 he ran in April, and is now the second best time ever run by a Canadian. Gary Reed, a silver medallist at the 2007 world championships, holds the national record at 1:43.68.
McBride is expected to be part of Canada's athletics team at the Rio Olympics. His times are well under the 1:46.00 standard to compete for the Canadian team, but he will still have to finish in the top two at the Canadian championships this summer or be the top-ranked athlete who does not finish in the top two
