The Canadian doubles team of Eugenie Bouchard and Gaby Dabrowski has been knocked out of the Olympic tennis tournament after a three-set loss to the Czech Republic in Rio de Janeiro.

Bouchard, 22, of Westmount, Que., and Dabrowski, 24, of Ottawa took the opening set 7-6(4), but dropped the deciding two sets 6-2, 6-4 to Czechs Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova on Tuesday.

The match proved to be a see-saw battle, most notably in the eight game of the third set.

Bouchard and Dabrowski had several opportunities to break serve down 4-3, but ultimately could not overcome Safarova and Strycova who held on to win the match.

Safarova and Strycova scored a huge victory to open the tournament with an upset win over defending Olympic champions Serena and Venus Williams of the U.S.

Canada still has a shot at a tennis medal in men's doubles with Toronto's Daniel Nestor and Vernon, B.C.'s Vasek Pospisil taking on Italians Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi.

Several Canadian flags and fans could be spotted rooting on Team Canada at the Olympic Tennis Court in Rio de Janeiro.

The Canadians took the lengthy first set 7-6, which needed a tiebreaker after being even at 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6.

The Czechs were riding high coming into their showdown with the Canadians after beating the top-ranked American doubles team — the Williams sisters — by a score of 6-3, 6-4 in the first round Sunday.
