Derek Drouin won gold in Olympic high jump.
The reigning world champion had the gold medal locked up after the next highest-jumping competitors missed their jumps, but he took a single run at 2.40 metres in an attempt to break the Olympic record of 2.39. It was his only miss of the night.

Karine Thomas and Jacqueline Simoneau were the first competitors to swim in the final after the results of a random draw for start positions and they held the lead through the first half of the competition. The field was stacked towards the end, however, and the pair finished in 7th.

There was a big upset on the beach Tuesday night after Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings (pictured) and April Ross lost in straight sets to Brazilians Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas.
