Humphries wins bobsleigh gold, Upperton takes bronze

Kaillie Humphries and Emily Baadsvik won gold in Thursday night's women's bobsleigh event in Whistler, B.C., and fellow Canadians Helen Upperton and Shelley-Ann Brown took the bronze.

Humphries, who piloted her sled to Olympic gold on the same track two years ago with former teammate Heather Moyse, captured her second World Cup victory of the season with a two-run time of 1:46.68.

"It definitely feels good to get the gold," said Humphries, who finished third at the World Cup in Whistler last season. "I made a mistake in corner 7 and 8 last year and in all honesty I was saying 'just don’t happen again.' I learned my lesson and it worked out tonight."

It was the third World Cup victory of Humphries' career as a pilot, and her 11th medal.

Upperton and Brown, who won Olympic silver together in Vancouver, reunited to claim the bronze in their first event together this season in 1:47.09.

"It is a bit of a weird start to the season to have my first race in February, but it was certainly fun to be back and get on the podium," said Upperton, who planned to take a one-year hiatus from the sport before deciding to compete in the two Canadian stops on the World Cup in hopes of earning a shot at an elusive world championship medal.

"Shelley and I love this place and were really excited to be here racing again."

Germany's Sandra Kiriasis and Berit Wiacker took the silver in 1:46.76.

Canada's Jenny Ciochetti and Marquise Brisebois finished 12th in their first World Cup start.
