Second "Lucky Loonie" heading to hockey Hall

Another famous dollar coin will join a growing collection at the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The $1 coin that was tucked in the padding in one of the nets during Canada's gold-medal win at the world hockey championships in Finland last Sunday will be added to the Hall on Saturday.

The Helsinki loonie will be part of the display that features the so-called "Lucky Loonie," which was frozen under the ice surface during Canada's gold-medal win at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

"These loonies have become symbolic of this success, and for our unique currency both on and off the ice," Canadian Hockey Association president Bob Nicholson said in a statement.

Anson Carter of the New York Rangers scored in late in overtime Sunday to give Canada a 3-2 victory over Sweden and its first world championship since 1997.

In addition to the loonie, several other articles from the world tournament will also be added, including:

  • Carter's jersey and stick
  • Goal-scoring pucks from the gold-medal game
  • Captain Ryan Smyth's skates (Smyth set a Canadian record for most games played at the worlds with 42)
  • Goaltender Sean Burke's gold medal
