Swiss forward Chris Egli was suspended for three games by the International Ice Hockey Federation on Sunday for his hit on Swedish star William Nylander at the world junior hockey championship.

Egli will miss the rest of Switzerland's preliminary round games at the international tournament but will be available for the playoffs should his team advance.

Nylander, who was selected eighth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 2014 NHL draft, received an open-ice hit from Egli in the first period of Sweden's 8-3 rout of Switzerland on Saturday.

Nylander had just gained possession of the puck and was turning to move up the ice when Egli came in and delivered a check to the head. Nylander dropped to the ice and then had to leave the game.

Egli received a game misconduct for checking to the head and neck area on the play.

Sweden team officials had no update on Nylander's condition after the game.
