Stamkos, Malkin put finishing touches on scoring awards

Tampa Bay Lightning sniper Steven Stamkos and Pittsburgh Penguins centre Evgeni Malkin ended their outstanding regular seasons by claiming the two most prized NHL scoring awards on Saturday night.

Stamkos scored his 60th goal of the season against the Winnipeg Jets to win the Rocket Richard Trophy as the league’s top goal scorer. The 22-year-old netted the magical No. 60 at 3:29 into the third period, becoming the first player to reach the mark since Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin did it four years ago.

While he was booed throughout the contest, Stamkos received an ovation from the Jets fans once he joined the 60-goal club in a game Tampa Bay won 4-3 in overtime.

"They were booing me all game and when that went in they obviously knew the magnitude of that goal and I have a lot of respect for all the fans here," the Markham, Ont., native said.

"That made it even more special, to like I said do it in Canada and  have them do an ovation like that, it was amazing."

Stamkos is the 20th player to reach the 60-goal plateau but is only the second since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr both accomplished the feat during the 1995-96 season.

Even without the help of Sidney Crosby for most of the season, Malkin was still able to skate away with the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s top point getter.

Malkin finished with 109 points and scored his 50th goal of the season in the final contest against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

Malkin, who also won the Art Ross Trophy in 2008-09, was the only player to register at least 100 points this season.

"I am glad, this is a great season," Malkin said following Pittsburgh’s 4-2 win over the Flyers.

Halak, Elliott, win Jennings Trophy

St. Louis Blues goalies Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott won the Jennings Trophy for the fewest goals allowed at 165.

Both goaltenders had terrific seasons with Elliott posting a 1.56 goals-against average and Halak having a .926 save percentage.

The last time a Blues goaltender won the Jennings honour was Roman Turek back in 1999-2000.
