Oilers sign defenceman Darnell Nurse to 2-year extension
Deal is worth $11.2 million US, according to multiple reports
The Edmonton Oilers signed defenceman Darnell Nurse to a two-year contract extension Monday.
The deal is worth $11.2 million, according to multiple reports. It runs through the 2021-22 season.
"I didn't want it drag into the summer," Nurse told reporters. "I didn't want it to carry on any longer and just wanted to get it over. I think it works out well for both sides."
Nurse would have been a restricted free agent after the season if he had remained unsigned.
The 25-year-old native of Hamilton, Ont., has 24 points (four goals, 20 assists) and 44 penalty minutes over 55 games this season. He is making $3.2 million this season in the second campaign of a two-year, $6.4 million deal.
Nurse, an alternate captain, was selected by the Oilers with the seventh overall pick of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
He has 112 points (28-84) over 334 career regular-season games with Edmonton.
