Flames defenceman Andersson listed 'day to day' after being struck by car

Calgary Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson was sent to hospital Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter in Detroit.

The team said Thursday that the incident occurred around 6 p.m. while Andersson was riding a scooter to dinner.

The 26-year-old Andersson was released from hospital later Wednesday night after undergoing a "battery of tests," the Flames said in Twitter post.

Calgary was in Detroit for a Thursday night game with the Red Wings.

He was going through a crosswalk," Flames general manager Brad Treliving said Thursday. "The good news — and the most important thing — is that Ras is doing well. He was transported by ambulance to Detroit Receiving Hospital."

The team says Andersson is doing well and will remain with the team on its eastern road trip, but is listed as "day to day."

Andersson is in his seventh full season with the Flames and leads Calgary defencemen with 34 points in 51 games.

Jack Hughes out week to week

Meanwhile, New Jersey Devils centre Jack Hughes has an upper-body injury and is considered week to week.

Coach Lindy Ruff gave the injury update following the Devils morning skate ahead of their home game Thursday night against the Seattle Kraken. Hughes left practice early Wednesday.

"He's a young guy — that's going to help with it," Ruff said. "I think it's going to be on the shorter end."

The 21-year-old Hughes represented New Jersey at NHL All-Star Weekend and is the biggest reason the the team contending and in a playoff spot for the first time in several seasons. He ranks third in the league in goals with 35 and ninth in points with 67, which is 16 more than the next-closest Devils player.

New Jersey is currently in second in the Metropolitan Division, behind the first-place Carolina Hurricanes and just ahead of the rival New York Rangers. If Hughes is out even two weeks, it would mean he misses eight games.

Leafs place Murray on IR

Also, the Toronto Maple Leafs have placed goaltender Matt Murray on injured reserve, the club announced Thursday.

The 28-year-old was nursing an ankle problem late last month, but was scheduled to start Jan. 27 against the Ottawa Senators before being made a late scratch.

Murray also missed time early in the schedule with a groin injury.

The two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins is 11-5-2 this season with a .911 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average.

Toronto, which has leaned heavily on fellow netminder Ilya Samsonov in recent weeks, recalled Joseph Woll in a corresponding move.

Additionally, the Leafs signed defenceman Conor Timmins to a two-year contract extension with an annual value of $1.1 million Us.

The 24-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont., has one goal and 11 assists in 18 games with Toronto since being acquired in a Nov. 23 trade with Arizona.

Timmins, who helped Canada win gold at the 2018 world junior championship, was set to become a restricted free agent after the season.

Avs' Makar out with head injury

Colorado Avalanche star defenceman Cale Makar will miss the final two games of a current road trip with a head injury.

Colorado coach Jared Bednar announced the news before Thursday night's game at the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Makar will also miss Saturday's matchup at Florida and will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Denver to face the Lightning on Tuesday night.

"We just kind of keep an eye on it day by day and see how it goes," Bednar said. "He's going to miss the remainder of this road trip at minimum."

Makar, who has 13 goals and 45 points in 45 games this season, was hurt on a check by Pittsburgh's Jeff Carter on Tuesday night.

Makar won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP last season when the Avalanche stopped Tampa Bay's two-year reign as NHL champions by winning a six-game Stanley Cup Final.
