The Los Angeles Kings have recalled veteran centre Mike Richards from their AHL affiliate two months after his high-profile demotion.

The defending Stanley Cup champions made the move Sunday before starting a five-game East Coast road trip with their playoff hopes in the balance.

Richards was waived and subsequently sent to the minors in January after several seasons of steadily declining offensive production. The former Philadelphia Flyers captain won two titles with the Kings, but has just five goals and 10 assists in 47 games with Los Angeles this season.

Richards scored 14 points in 16 games in Manchester. He is in the middle of a 12-year, $69 million contract through 2020.

The Kings have lost three of four to fall out of playoff position with 11 games left.
