Ducks reward Ryan Getzlaf with 8-year contract extension
Attention now turns to Corey Perry's status
The Anaheim Ducks announced an eight-year contract extension Friday worth $66 million for centre Ryan Getzlaf, good through the 2020-21 season.
"We are very happy to have Ryan committed to this franchise long-term," Ducks general manager Bob Murray said in a statement. "He has often expressed his interest to stay in Anaheim for his entire career, a goal we share. He is a leader, a proven winner, and possesses a skill set that's hard to find. This is a great day for the Ducks."
Like the Ducks in general, Getzlaf has been enjoying a bounce-back season after a disappointing 2011-12. He leads the Ducks with nine goals and 18 assists through 22 games.
He has appeared in 534 career NHL games with the Ducks, compiling 146 goals and 353 assists, with 504 penalty minutes.
In addition to being a part of the club's 2007 Stanley Cup championship, he won gold at the Olympics with Canada in 2010.
The Regina native was selected 19th overall in the 2003 NHL draft.
Attention will now turn to Getzlaf's teammate with the Ducks and on the 2010 Olympic team, Corey Perry. The right wing is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in July.
Getzlaf this season earns the pro-rated amount of $6.125 million US, with a cap hit of just over $5.3 million.
