In a rather eventful opening day at the world junior championships, the United State's Alex DeBrincat decided to get himself thrown out of the highly anticipated round robin match against Canada.

The current top scorer in the OHL speared Canadian forward Travis Konecny right in front of a referee during the opening frame.

The 18-year-old Erie Otter centre was slapped with a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the infraction. Canada was unable to capitalize on the power play, but the IIHF will have to take another look at the play.

For what it's worth, DeBrincat looked pretty dejected as he headed out to watch the remainder of the game.

Ultimately, the Americans didn't need DeBrincat. They went on to claim an eventual 4-2 victory over the Canadians.
