Dan Carcillo, Blackhawks forward, banned 6 games for Perreault hit
Chicago veteran already served 1 game while awaiting hearing
Chicago Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo was suspended for six games without pay for cross-checking Winnipeg Jets forward Mathieu Perreault, the league announced Monday.
With 10 seconds remaining in the second period during the Chicago-Winnipeg game last Friday, Perreault was in the process of receiving a slashing penalty after whacking the stick out of Blackhawks defenceman Duncan Keith’s hand.
Carcillo then skated behind Perreault and cross-checking him across the left arm.
Carcillo was assessed a minor penalty.
The league took into consideration that Carcillo is a repeat offender in its decision.
Carcillo sat out Chicago's game Sunday night while awaiting his hearing, and will miss the next five games.
"It has nothing to do with the puck and the blow is delivered after the whistle has blown the play dead," Patrick Burke said in the video announcing the suspension. "Coming up from behind the unaware Perreault, Carcillo is entirely in control of what happens. After hearing the whistle, Carcillo chooses to deliver a forceful cross check that strikes Perreault in an unprotected spot on his arm."
Perreault has not played since suffering the injury. The Jets have not said how severe it is.
Carcillo has the right to appeal to the commissioner because the suspension is longer than five games. He also had a right to an in-person hearing but waived it to instead do it by phone.
As a repeat offender, Carcillo will forfeit US$40,243.92 in salary.
