Connor McDavid recorded a career high five points in the Edmonton Oilers' 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night and now has 12 points in six games since returning from injury.

But after being sidelined for over 30 games with a broken collarbone, does the 19-year-old have enough time to prove his case for the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie for the 2015-16 season?

McDavid, who has nine goals and 15 assists, vaulted himself into 10th place in the rookie scoring race after his outburst against Toronto.

If total points is the main measure for success, then McDavid has some catching up to do.

Chicago Blackhawks winger Artemi Panarin has a sizable lead with 52 points, while Dylan Larkin of the Detroit Red Wings (38 points), Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres (36 points), and Maxi Domi of the Arizona Coyotes (35 points) round out the top four after Thursday's games.

Either way, there would seem to be reason for optimism in Edmonton.
