Canucks forward Alex Burrows was released from a Calgary hospital Tuesday night, but remained in the city after leaving the ice in pain during a morning skate.

Burrows did not play in a 3-1 loss to the Calgary Flames, who lead the Western Conference quarter-final series three games to one with the victory.

"He's been released from hospital. He won't travel with us," Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins said following the game. "We'll keep him over night just to make sure everything's good."

Burrows abruptly left the ice in distress during the morning practice.

Specifics of the injury were not immediately released, but Burrows reportedly suffered a broken rib.

The Canucks announced in a tweet that Burrows would not play in Game 4 after he "sustained an upper body injury & was taken to hospital after practice this morning for precautionary reasons."

Canucks spokesman Ben Brown told CBC News that the injury was hockey related and not tied to a medical condition.

Burrows, who plays on the Canucks' top line with the Sedin twins, had been set to play in Game 4 after avoiding what is usually an automatic suspension for instigating a fight during the final five minutes of a game. He was involved in an altercation with Calgary's Kris Russell with 85 seconds left in Vancouver's Game 3 loss in Calgary and received a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.

The NHL, though, opted not to suspend Burrows because his actions were "not related to the score, previous incidents in the game or prior games, retaliatory in nature, [or] 'message sending.'"

Burrows has no goals and two assists in the series after recording 33 points in 70 regular-season games.

The Canucks recalled 22-year-old forward Sven Baertschi earlier in the day.
