Nathan MacKinnon was the first name called out on Sunday at this year's NHL Entry Draft in Newark, N.J.
The Colorado Avalanche selected the 17-year-old centre after making it known publicly earlier in the week that they planned on drafting the Halifax native.

Draft day deals
But it's not just the youngsters that made a splash on draft day.
The Vancouver Canucks cleared up their crease, and established stars like Tyler Seguin have been rumoured to be in play and could be on the move, while Vincent Lecavalier could have a new team by the end of the day.

- The Vancouver Canucks seem to have solved their goaltending conundrum after trading goalie Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils for the ninth overall pick (Vancouver chose London Knights forward Bo Horvat with the selection).
- Dave Bolland, who scored the Stanley Cup winning goal for the Chicago Blackhawks a week ago, wastraded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for three draft picks.
- The Penguins seem keen to keep Kris Letang on their roster, with a reported eight year, $58 million (US) contract being discussed.
- The Winnipeg Jets added some forward depth with the acquisition of Michael Frolik from the Chicago Blackhawks.
- The Phoenix Coyotes and Mike Smith seem to be close on a new six-year deal.
- The New York Rangers sent Benn Ferriero and a sixth round pick in the 2014 draft to the Minnesota Wild for defenceman Justin Falk.
- The San Jose Sharks dealt a second round pick (50th overall) to the Penguins for forward Tyler Kennedy.
