Leafs re-sign Schenn to 5-year deal

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn has signed a five-year contract with training camp opening Friday, the NHL announced in a news release.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn has signed an $18-million US, five-year contract.

The deal was announced on the eve of training camp.

Schenn, 21, played all 82 games last season, collecting five goals and 17 assists.

The Saskatoon native is entering his fourth season with the Maple Leafs.

"I've been given nothing but a great opportunity here," said Schenn. "I'm looking forward to the next five years here in Toronto."

Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson said in Friday he's not looking for drastic improvments in point production just because of the higher salary Schenn now commands.

"We want him to just play hard defence," Wilson said. "He's a stay-at-home, shutdown type of guy and he's got to excel at that."

Wilson said Schenn will be tasked quite often with neutralizing the opposition's top line.

"The way were going to be playing this year, with a little more encouragment from the defencemen being a part of offence … he should be able to put up maybe better offensive numbers, but that's not what I'm looking for [from him]," Wilson said.

Schenn, who was Toronto first-round pick, fifth overall, in the 2008 NHL entry draft, finished a three-year, $2.625 million contract at the end of last season.

In his three years with Toronto, he has 12 goals and 41 assists for 53 points.
