Golfer's father bet son would win The Open before age 26
Ten years ago Rory McIlroy's dad Gerry had an inkling about his son's golfing ability.
Fast forward to the present, and the younger McIlroy earned a wire-to-wire win at the British Open. He also earned his dad — and his dad's friends — a six-figure pay day in the process, and proved his father's fortune telling abilities to be accurate.
That's because Gerry, according to the BBC's Andrew Cotter, placed a bet a decade ago that his son would win the Claret Jug by age 26 (McIlroy is 25).
According to ESPN, Gerry put up £200 ($341 US) at 500:1 odds, meaning he cashed in on $171,000 for his son's victory.
But he wasn't the only one to show his confidence in the (at the time) 15-year-old. Two of Gerry's friends also put up money on Rory, ESPN reported. They wagered £200 each at 150:1 odds, earning a combined payout of $136,700 US.
