Trestman a finalist for U Miami job: report
Montreal Alouettes coach has ties to south Florida
Marc Trestman refused to speak about his future as he prepared his Montreal Alouettes in the last week of November for what would be a second-straight Grey Cup victory.
Now that future seems to be catching up to the Alouettes head coach.
A Miami Herald story says Trestman is one of three finalists for the vacant head coaching job with the University of Miami Hurricanes. The newspaper said athletic director Kirby Hocutt traveled to North Carolina on Saturday to meet with Trestman,
Also reportedly on the list are Randy Edsall, who took the University of Connecticut Huskies to their first BCS bowl berth with an 8-4 mark, and Al Golden, of Temple, who was also 8-4 and actually beat UConn earlier in the season.
Trestman, who played his college ball at the University of Minnesota and was rumoured for that head coaching job (it went to Jerry Kill), has close ties to south Florida.
He served as an assistant coach with the Hurricanes from 1981-1984 — including working with quarterback Bernie Kosar in the national championship season of 1983. At the same time, Trestman earned his law degree from the school.
In 2004, Trestman coached the Miami Dolphins quarterbacks, in the middle of a 20-year run as a National Football League assistant.
Since coming to Montreal in 2008, Trestman has gone 38-16, made all three Grey Cups and won the last two.
Until recently one of America's premier college football programs, the Miami Hurricanes have run into some relatively tough times, going just 28-22 (.560) in the last four years after 27 seasons of at least a .716 mark.
The school fired coach Randy Shannon, eight games into this year.
