Eskimos top CFL weekly awards
Siddeeq Shabazz of the Edmonton Eskimos on Wednesday was named the top defender for the final week of the CFL regular season, while teammate Kamau Peterson's outstanding play was also noted.
Shabazz recorded eight tackles and two sacks and forced a fumbled in a 37-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes.
Peterson was deemed the top Canadian for the week after hauling in 10 passes for 108 yards. He finished second in the league with 101 catches for the season.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers kicker Alexis Serna was cited for the special teams player honour in Week 19 after going four-for-four on field goal attempts in the team's win over Hamilton.
Toronto Argonauts quarterback Kerry Joseph was named the CFL's offensive player of the week for the final week of the regular season, undoubtedly cold comfort after a disappointing season.
Joseph completed 25 of 38 passes for 307 yards and five touchdowns, yet the Argos lost their ninth consecutive game to finish 4-14.
The outstanding game pushed Joseph over 4,000 yards for the season (4,714) and gave him more touchdowns (17) than interceptions (14). Still, it was far short of the standard that saw him win the league's outstanding player of the year award last season while with Saskatchewan.
