Maurice Price won't be catching passes this season for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The CFL club confirmed Thursday that Price, 30, has filed retirement papers with the league.

"We are surprised and disappointed to hear of Maurice Price's decision to retire," Riders head coach/GM Chris Jones said in a statement. "We were given no indication when we acquired Maurice and negotiated a new contract that he may not continue playing.

"As a team we will continue to move forward with our free agent camps and work through the CFL draft. An opportunity has opened up for another player."

Saskatchewan acquired the six-foot, 200-pound Price from the Ottawa Redblacks on Jan. 11. He had 58 catches for 603 yards and a TD last season.

The Riders said as per CFL rules, the deal with Ottawa will stand.
