Toronto Argonauts star running back Chad Kackert has retired.

The team says Kackert will be its new strength and conditioning coach.

Kackert, the 2012 Grey Cup MVP, suffered a broken ankle late last season.

Argos head coach Scott Milanovich says it became clear to the Argos and Kackert "that his leg injury would prevent him from competing at a high level."

"We believe his experience will be valuable to our players in helping them prepare themselves physically each week," Milanovich said in a statement.

The Argonauts open training camp Sunday.
