Als' Richardson headlines CFL weekly awards

Receiver Jamel Richardson, who led the Montreal Alouettes to a season-opening win over the B.C. Lions, was named the CFL's offensive player of the week Tuesday.

Receiver Jamel Richardson, who led the Montreal Alouettes to a season-opening win over the B.C. Lions, was named the CFL's offensive player of the week Tuesday.

Richardson had nine catches for a career-high 162 yards and two TDs in Montreal's 30-26 home win over B.C. His touchdowns came on receptions of 40 and 46 yards.

Winnipeg's Alex Suber was named the top defensive player. Suber had six tackles and a 66-yard interception return for a TD in leading the Blue Bombers past the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24-16.

Teammate Ian Logan captured top Canadian honours. The Bombers safety had two interceptions and three tackles versus the Ticats.

B.C.'s Tim Brown was named the special-teams player of the week. Brown returned five punts for 132 yards — including a 97-yard TD return — and had five kickoff returns for 50 yards against Montreal.
