Bombers coach Kelly charged with assault

Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly was arrested Thursday at his home in Bridgeport, Pa., near Philadelphia, and charged with assault and harassment after an alleged domestic dispute.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly was arrested Thursday at his home in Bridgeport, Pa., near Philadelphia, and charged with assault and harassment after an alleged domestic dispute.

He also lost his job.

Bridgeport police said they went to Kelly's home just after 11 a.m. ET after Kelly's former girlfriend, Andrea Peterson, called 911.

When police arrived, Kelly and Peterson allegedly continued to argue before Kelly was taken to the station, Sgt. John Cane said. Kelly was later released pending a court appearance next week.

Police said Peterson had a cut on her lip, redness on her neck and a small cut on her finger, while Kelly, 51, had some bruising on his face.

The Blue Bombers board of directors held an emergency meeting Thursday to discuss Kelly's future with the team, and later confirmed in a statement that he was "relieved of his duties as head coach."

Bombers chairman Ken Hildahl said every Blue Bombers contract has a clause requiring employees to conduct themselves in a professional manner.

The team had backed the beleaguered and controversial Kelly, even though the Bombers sputtered to a 7-11 record.

Bauer tenders resignation

In an unrelated move, Hildahl was also part of a news conference earlier Thursday announcing the resignation of Bombers president and CEO Lyle Bauer.

"Domestic issues have many sides … but personally, I have no tolerance for any type of domestic issues and I know [that sentiment] will be shared by the board," Bauer said in addressing Kelly's arrest.
