Argonauts give Medlock another shot
CFL club turns to kicker with Grant Shaw struggling in field-goal department
The Toronto Argonauts continue to upgrade their roster as they remain in the CFL playoff hunt.
Import kicker Justin Medlock, the team's outstanding special teams player in 2009, is back in the fold after failing to win his job back in July.
Rookie kicker Grant Shaw has made good on just 19 of 29 field-goal attempts for a 65.5 per cent success rate, good for seventh among the league's eight regular kickers.
"We feel Grant Shaw has a great future in this league," Argos head coach Jim Barker said in a statement, "but as we make our push for the playoffs, we felt the opportunity to sign the premier kicker in this league last year was too good to pass up.
"We will continue to groom Grant and he will help our football team in other ways."
On Tuesday, Toronto signed free-agent defensive end Ricky Foley, the CFL's top Canadian in 2009.
The Argos are third in the East Division with a 5-5 record, but have lost three in a row. They host fourth-place Winnipeg (3-7) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
Toronto '2nd home': Medlock
Medlock played 19 games for the Argos in 2009, connecting on 40 of 46 of his field-goal attempts and punting 120 times for 5,076 yards.
The California native then went south, signing with the National Football League's Washington Redskins and then the Detroit Lions, who waived Medlock on June 29.
"I consider [Toronto] to be my second home and I've missed being here," Medlock, who is signed through the 2011 campaign, said in a statement released by the Argonauts. "I can't wait to get reacquainted with the great Argos fans and the team, and meet the new coaches."
