CBC Sports host Scott Russell awarded Diamond Jubilee Medal

CBC Sports broadcaster Scott Russell has been awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to sports in Canada.

Russell received the honour from Bal Gosal, Canada’s Minister of State (Sport), on Saturday in Niagara Falls, Ont., where Russell was anchoring CBC’s Sports Day in Canada coverage.

The Diamond Jubilee medal was created to mark this year’s celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne as Canada’s official head of state. 60,000 Canadians are being recognized for various contributions and achievements.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Stephen Harper awarded Diamond Jubilee medals to Canada’s 2012 Olympians and Paralympians.

During his more than two decades with the CBC, Russell has become one of the most recognized and passionate champions of amateur sport in Canada. The Gemini Award winning broadcaster and acclaimed author hosts CBC’s Sports Weekend program and has covered numerous Olympic Games, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games.
