The Calgary Stampede became even more lucrative on Thursday after organizers announced an increase in prize money.

The event, already the richest outdoor rodeo in the world, will bump up its winnings to $2 million for 2009 — a jump from the $1.875 million that riders competed for last season.

"The Calgary Stampede continues to lead the way in the world of rodeo," said Mike Whittle, Calgary Stampede vice-president of agriculture and western events.

"The added prize money will make the first eight days even more competitive and important for the contestants, which will give the fans an even better show."

The majority of the added $125,000 will be paid out to top performing cowboys and cowgirls in the first eight days of the rodeo, when athletes compete for spots toward Wildcard Saturday and Sunday Showdown.

Riders battle for $100,000 in their respective events.

This summer's Calgary Stampede goes July 3-12.
