Kayla McBride scored a season-high 24 points and Tiffany Mitchell put back her own miss with 3.0 seconds left to help the visiting Minnesota Lynx beat the Washington Mystics 80-78 Saturday night and avoid tying the franchise record for consecutive losses to open a season.

Minnesota (1-6) lost seven straight to open the 2007 season.

Mitchell took an inbounds pass on the right side and had a driving layup attempt blocked by Brittney Sykes but grabbed the offensive rebound and made the go-ahead layup.

Elena Delle Donne made a layup and, after Washington's defence forced a shot-clock violation, Shakira Austin scored inside to make it 71-all with 3:18 to play. Jessica Shepard answered with six consecutive points as the Mystics missed six consecutive field-goal attempts before a short basket by Ariel Atkins trimmed their deficit to 77-75. Napheesa Collier made 1 of 2 from the free-throw line with 15 seconds to go and Sykes hit a three-pointer to tie it 78-all with 7.4 remaining.

Collier finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals and Mitchell added 10 points and seven rebounds for Minnesota. Shepard had 10 points, including six in the final three minutes, to go with six rebounds and six assists.

Atkins finished with 18 points, including four three-pointers, and Austin had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Washington (3-3). Natasha Cloud added 14 points with nine assists and Delle Donne scored 12 points.

Sparks keep Storm winless on season

Nneka Ogwumike had 27 points and 14 rebounds, Layshia Clarendon had 16 points, six assists and three steals and the Sparks beat the Seattle Storm 92-85 Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Seattle (0-4) is off to its worst start since it lost four in a row in its inaugural season in 2000.

Jewell Loyd hit a 3-pointer that gave Seattle a two-point lead with 3:36 left in the third quarter but the Sparks scored 17 of the next 23 points to make it 72-61 — L.A.'s biggest lead of the game. Brown capped the spurt with a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter.

Loyd scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and Jade Melbourne's 3-pointer — which Loyd assisted on — trimmed Seattle's deficit to 86-82 with 1:42 remaining but the Storm got no closer.

Chiney Ogwumike added 15 points and Lexie Brown scored 14 for Los Angeles (3-2). Jordin Canada had nine points, seven assists and four steals.

Loyd tied her career high with eight 3-pointers and finished with 37 points for Seattle, one shy of her career best. Ezi Magbegor added 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Seattle hit 13 3-pointers but committed 16 turnovers, which the Sparks converted into 17 points. Los Angeles outscored the Storm 23-12 from the free-throw line on 11 more (27) attempts.
