The general manager of the Toronto Raptors is denouncing the kidnapping of schoolgirls in his native Nigeria.

Almost 300 girls have been missing since they were kidnapped three weeks ago in northeastern Nigeria.

An Islamic extremist group is claiming responsibility and the group's leader is threatening to sell the captives.

Masai Ujiri calls the abductions "an absolute atrocity" that should not be happening.

Ujiri grew up in northern Nigeria and says he has many relatives still living there.

Ujiri has never strayed far from his African roots since he arrived in North America 21 years ago to play college basketball in Bismarck, N.D.

In 2003, he founded a program to educate and enrich the lives of African youth through basketball.
