CIS basketball: Dalhousie upsets Ottawa to advance to semis

The CIS basketball championships are underway, with the men's tournament taking place at the University of British Columbia and the women's tournament at the University of New Brunswick-Fredericton.

Check out the results from today's quarter-finals:

Men's

The top-ranked Ryerson Rams survived a scare but scored a 109-101 overtime win against the UBC Thunderbirds Thursday night at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's basketball tournament.

After trailing all game Rams' guard Jean-Victor Mukama forced the overtime when he hit a three-point shot with 28 seconds left to tie the score 90-90. On the next possession Thunderbird guard Jordan Jensen-Whyte let the clock tick down to under 10 seconds but missed his shot.

Ryerson took the momentum into the five-minute overtime. Forward Kadeem Green hit two field goals, then guard Roshane Roberts launched a three.

Ryerson came into the tournament ranked No. 1 while host UBC was No. 8.

The Thunderbirds, who led by as much as 10 points during the game, were leading 84-82 with 3:04 left. Guard Jordan Jensen-Whyte drove the net for a layup and was fouled. He made the free throw giving UBC a five-point lead.

Elsewhere, a steal by guard Thomas Cooper in the dying seconds of the game helped the Calgary Dinos defeat the McGill Redmen 72-69 Thursday.

Cooper was fouled on the play, then calmly sank both free throws in the game played at the UBC Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

With McGill leading 69-68 with just 33 second remaining, Montreal's Tychon Carter-Newman was called for travelling. When Calgary got the ball guard Jhony Verrone was fouled. He hit both free throws to give the Dinos a 70-69 lead.

In earlier games, the defending champion Carleton Ravens advanced to the semifinals with a 91-75 victory over Thompson Rivers Wolfpack while the Dalhousie Tigers upset the third-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees 87-83.

Carleton and Dalhousie will meet Saturday with the winner advancing to Sunday's final.

Ryerson will face Calgary in Saturday's other semifinal.

Women's

Dalyce Emmerson had 25 points and 17 rebounds to lead the second-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies past the No. 7 Ottawa Gee-Gees 73-62 on Thursday at the Canadian university women's basketball tournament.

Emmerson was 7-of-9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help Saskatchewan cement the win. The double-double was her third of the post-season.

"We have a lot of experience on our team this year, a lot of us have been to national championships," said Emmerson, a fifth-year player. "We just had to settle in on defence.

"Once we made some adjustments down there we were able to pull away on the offensive end."

Desarae Hogberg added 14 points for Saskatchewan while Sabine Dukate and Kelsey Trulsrud both had 11 points.

Kellie Ring led Ottawa with 19 points and eight rebounds.

In other action, the Saint Mary's Huskies edged the Alberta Pandas 53-52 and McGill beat UNB 58-52.

Elle Hendershot had 12 points and 16 rebounds to lead St. Mary's to its win. The third-ranked Huskies outscored Alberta 37-25 in the second half to erase an 11-point half-time deficit.

Maddie Rogers had a game-high 16 points for No. 6 Alberta.

Mariam Sylla had 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench for McGill, which entered the tournament as the top seed.

Grace Wade led the UNB with 15 points and six assists.

Ryerson and Regina met in the last quarter-final, and CIS women's basketball player of the year Keneca Pingue-Giles led Ryerson to the victory with 29 points en route to a 73-70 victory. 

The Rams led the whole way, but the Cougars outscored them by 10 points in the fourth quarter to make the game close.
