Ryan Kellogg among 7 Canadians chosen on Day 2 of MLB draft

Make it 10 Canadians selected through two days of the annual draft of high-schoolers and collegians after seven were chosen in Rounds 3-10 on Tuesday.

Make it 10 Canadians selected through two days of baseball's annual draft of high-schoolers and collegians.

First baseman Josh Naylor of Mississauga, Ont., made history on Monday night becoming the highest selected Canadian position player at 12th overall by Miami and was followed by pitchers Michael Soroka (28th, Atlanta) and Jeff Degano (57th, New York Yankees) in the first round.

On Tuesday, seven more Canadians were chosen as Rounds 3-10 were completed:

  • OF Miles Gordon: 4th round, 115th overall (Cincinnati)
  • OF Demi Orimoloye: 4th round, 121st overall (Milwaukee)
  • LHP Ryan Kellogg: 5th round, 143rd overall (Chicago Cubs)
  • 3B Connor Panas: 9th round, 272nd overall (Toronto)
  • RHP Devon Stewart: 9th round, 274th overall (Cleveland)
  • C Owen Spiwak: 10th round, 302nd overall (Toronto)
  • OF Cole Bauml: 10th round, 310th overall (Detroit)

Gordon: The Oakville, Ont., native is in his first year with the Canadian junior national team. The 17-year-old led the club with a .395 batting average at the Dominican Summer League tour, where he homered and added a double and triple in 12 games.

Orimoloye: A member of the Ottawa-Nepean Canadians, the 18-year-old stands six-foot-four and 225 pounds and entered the draft ranked 39th on Baseball America's top 50 list. Orimoloye, who swatted three homers on the recent Dominican tour, helped Canada to a bronze medal at the 2014 under-18 COPABE Pan American Championship in La Paz, Mexico.

Kellogg: The 21-year-old from Whitby, Ont., is a former junior national team MVP. After being selected 12th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012, he starred for three seasons at Arizona State, where he compiled an impressive 28-6 record that included a no-hitter against Oregon State. Kellogg was a key contributor to the Canadian squad that won silver at the 2012 IBAF under-18 World Cup in Seoul, South Korea.

Panas: The Canisius College third baseman was chosen by his hometown Toronto Blue Jays. Panas had a strong four-year stint at the Buffalo school, hitting .372 in his senior season with 11 homers and 68 runs batted in.

Stewart: Like Panas, the right-handed pitcher was a member of the Canisius College Griffins, with whom he started 16 games in his senior year and went 7-7 with a 3.84 earned-run average.

Spiwak: An ex-junior national team member, the Mississauga, Ont., native out of Odessa (Tex.) College represented Canada in two IBAF under-18 World Cup events, winning silver in 2012 and finishing seventh the following year. In his second season at Odessa, Spiwak topped the team with a .387 average and added eight home runs and a team-leading 54 RBIs.

Bauml: A native of Muenster, Sask., Bauml led North Kentucky University this season with a .350 average and eight homers.

Day 3 of the draft begins at noon ET Wednesday with Rounds 11-40.
