Marcus Stroman, injured Blue Jays pitcher, cleared to throw off mound

Imagine if promising right-hander Marcus Stroman made a surprise return from the disabled list to help the Blue Jays make a September push for a playoff berth? It appears the starting pitcher has made significant progress in his recovery from a torn ACL.

Doctor ‘stunned’ by recovery from torn ACL

Injured Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman on Monday was cleared by orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews to throw off a mound. In the spring, Toronto ruled out the right-handed starter's return for the 2015 season after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while participating in a bunting drill during spring training. But Stroman could be back in Toronto in September to help the team in its attempt to secure a playoff berth.

Check out these numbers:

  • In his last 13 starts, Toronto Blue Jays knuckleballer R.A. Dickey sports a 2.59 earned-run average.
  • Blue Jays starting pitchers have allowed three earned runs or fewer in 14 consecutive outings, the longest Toronto streak since September 2006.
  • Brett Cecil has turned in 15 straight scoreless appearances
  • Fellow reliever Aaron Sanchez has tossed seven no-hit innings since his return from injury.

So, who needs pitching?

Perhaps not the Blue Jays (at least right now), but what if promising right-hander Marcus Stroman made a surprise return from the disabled list to help Toronto make a September push for a division title or wild-card playoff berth?

Well, there appears to be a possibility, given the 23-year-old's quick recovery from a torn ligament in his left knee, suffered while participating in a bunting drill during spring training. On Monday, renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews cleared Stroman to throw off a mound.

In the spring, the Blue Jays said Stroman would miss the entire 2015 season. However, the pitcher who had an 11-6 record and 3.65 ERA in 26 games (20 starts) last season has insisted on several occasions he would be able to return in September.
