Jays 1st base coach Torey Lovullo follows Farrell to Red Sox
Ex-manager John Farrell’s raiding of the Toronto Blue Jays coaching staff began Friday.
The new Red Sox skipper has lured former Jays first base coach and good friend Torey Lovullo to Boston to serve as bench coach.
Lovullo, a 47-year-old former infielder with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, came to Toronto with Farrell two years ago from Boston after spending time as manager of the Red Sox’s AAA affiliate in Pawtucket, RI.
Lovullo, whose contract with the Jays expired after this season, interviewed for the vacant managerial job with Boston in 2011 after the team chose not to renew Terry Francona’s contract.
The California native reportedly was also considered for jobs with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006 and Pittsburgh Pirates in 2007.
Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos had said he would not stand in the way of Lovullo or any other coach departing for another team.
Farrell agreed to a multi-year deal with the Red Sox on Oct. 21.
